Winners at the 2010 & 2011 Snowboarding World Cup in Telluride had these awards draped around their neck. The adornments feature an Issenberg black and white photograph secured with red rivets and pressed against rich, red wool felt, the color of the client’s logo (the miner’s axe). The polished mild steel of the frame has laser-cut text.

Colorful, clean, and slightly edgy awards were created for the very fun “Mountains to Desert” aka “M2D” bike ride & fundraising event. Steel bike chains weld very nicely to mild steel and the titanium cogs attach perfectly with rivets. Red wool felt adds a bit more color, and tiny steel cable completes the industrial style of these custom awards.
Created for the ATLAS OF THE SAN MIGUEL show at the Ah Haa School, these two steel tables are inspired by the engaging topographical maps of the San Miguel River Watershed. A graphically wild two-mile section of the San Miguel floats across the top of River Table, whereas artist’s license is used in Topo Table; a series of movable levels is inspired by naturally perfect contour lines representing hills and peaks. This donor wall sculpture for the Telluride Medical Center is fabricated with translucent acrylic. Two layers of the green, aspen-leaf graphic fill the shape, creating depth. Donor names hover in relief over each section of the emergency symbol.
Each year the graduating seniors choose their image, often a creative self-portrait, to feature on their plaque. The personalized laser cut plaques are finished with a blackening patina and wax. They are displayed proudly on and snap strongly to the school’s entryway wall.
The interior railing (top) is fabricated with mild steel and finished with a red-brown patina and wax. The baluster curve, reflective of the Arts & Crafts style of the house, creates both a positive pattern and interesting negative space. The curved deck railing is an exterior version of the interior spiral railing, with a powdercoat finish.
The local bears are numerous, intelligent and very persistent in Cheakamus Crossing, originally the Whistler Olympic Athlete Village and now a community neighborhood. But they can’t claw their way into these custom-designed, bear-resistant trash and recycling receptacles. Not just functional, but also aesthetic, the laser-cut designs feature the region’s Black Tusk mountain, river rocks and autumn leaves.

A unique and imaginative way to store wine: the wine bottles line the room, resting horizontally along the direction of the two walls with labels in view. Steel tubes with a patina finish cradle the bottles.
The “Never Stop Exploring Award” was a single trophy custom designed for The North Face to award to a specialty running shop. Laser cut steel plates with an abstracted mountain theme sandwich layers of stained birch plywood and richly hued wool felt. The award is just under four square feet, two-sided, identical on both sides, and hangs in the storefront window of the recipient.
These two-sided marquee boxes can be viewed as people drive into and out of town; each side has a section for happenings at both the Palm Theatre and the Telluride High School. The boxes are all steel and announcements attach simply with magnets. The oversized bolts and railroad ties welded to the vertical posts reflect the town’s mining heritage.
This bench and table combo feature heavy-gauge plate steel, finished with a rich brown-bronze patina. Photo etched mountainscapes are framed in delicate, laser-cut leaf shapes.
These awards were custom designed for the 2009 Mountainfilm in Telluride, an annual film festival screening the best independent documentary films from around the world. Since 1996, Issenberg has been selected to create six of the festival awards.

This one-day class introduces students to a handful of basic metalsmithing techniques. Working with copper, students learn to acid etch and patina metal surfaces and the ancient art of bowl raising. Students will leave this class with two finished projects and several new skills that can easily be continued at home. Possible projects include functional objects such as bowls, books and frames. This class is geared toward beginners, but Lisa will have projects for more advanced students as well.

This course provides an abridged overview of the history of design since the Industrial Revolution. We cover major design movements such as Art Nouveau, Art Deco, The Bauhaus and Modernism, and discuss key figures such as Thonet, Morris, Gropius, Le Corbusier, Perriand and Loewy, who influenced these design movements. This class includes slides, lectures, take home reading material and class participation. A reading list is provided for those who wish to dive deeper.
